WHAT'S A SYNVOCATION? An invocation invokes Spirit. A Synvocation is meant to do the same, but the word better matches our teaching. Either or both of us (Preston & Emily) give talks with a Spiritual lesson - called Synvocations - at some of our events (ie: Synthesis, Synphoria, The Synphorium). These talks are Possibility seeds planted in the heart-mind, to nurture, grow, and help reveal one's already Authentic Self. The 7 Sacred Choices of the Hero’s Journey based on Emily's interpretations of the teachings of Rev Ed Townley THE SEVEN CHOICES OF THE HERO’S JOURNEY will show you where you are, and give you an idea of where you are headed in all of your powerful life journeys. For you truly are a Hero, and this world needs you. Explore, Commit, Escape, Recommit, Fight, Surrender, Return. Choice 1...the Choice to Explore. The first question is: Will you explore this path? (in total darkness) Where was the beginning? The start? The launch? The point of contact? When was the initiation? The commencement? The rite of passage? What was the first brick on the path that brought you to this very exact moment in this very exact place? What was the first spark? What quest did you say YES to? Was it even a spark? Or was it a tumble? An accident perhaps? A mistake or perceived error? Was it because you met someone, supposedly by chance? Or was it a deliberate meeting? Could it have been someone who had been close to you for a long time, and you suddenly saw them in a new light? How many different answers do you have for each of those questions? These are all great questions, to help you see how you got *here*. In the beginning, there was not nothing. This story begins, with you, leading your life, living your days, one day following another, like your feet on your path, one step, each in front of the last. So this beginning, is whenever, and wherever YOU desire it to be. There are so many beginnings in life, that you may have no idea WHERE to begin. The first day of this adventure, is a day like any other, you are doing things that are usual, familiar. Your hands are doing the same familiar actions, your mouth is saying the same stories... You’re in a place where it’s very comfortable, there’s minimal challenge, not much evolution. Perhaps you are content, happy with the way things are. Or perhaps your heart or spirit is crying out “there must be more to life than this!” There must be more out there beyond the horizon there must be more than the limits of my imagination... for all that I *can* imagine, is the familiar. Then, suddenly, maybe loudly, or quietly... Something happens, an intrusion on this peace an intrusion on this routine something creeps or runs by you meet a person, or find something a strange key perhaps, an invitation, a question, a White Rabbit. But whatever form this White Rabbit takes... it is unique and it catches your attention out of the corner of your eye simply by the virtue of its very Presence so here we come to your first choice. The choice to explore. The question that is before you is... will you explore this path? Do you follow this White Rabbit? Do you say yes to explore? Or do you say no.... and this particular journey is over before it’s even begun Knowing you for who you are I expect that you would say yes and you followed this invitation. The first shift happens in your perception. As if you look down at your feet to take the first step and realize that, like Dorothy just having landed in Oz, you’re already standing on the first brick of your path right now. It’s always been there. This first part is easy. exploring...this first choice, everything is familiar everything is safe, everything you see is something that you recognize The people you see here are the people of your village, your tribe, your family.... their mannerisms and traditions are as familiar to you as the lines in your hands. The language you hear around you is your mother tongue, The earth is so familiar to you, under your feet, That you could turn around and walk backward without stumbling It’s very comfortable. It is here, in this energy of exploring that you start to shift your perception such that you’re viewing the world in a new way. With hunger and anticipation for new experiences. Looking at your familiar world in this energy of hunger, some things that were always there, may suddenly look new. But soon you come to the border of the world you have known You come to the end, feeling an invisible line, a threshold, where crossing means leaving known safety. So here you are, at the end of your familiar world you’ve reached the horizon. You have come to the end of the first choice, this choice to safely explore. Instead of stopping here, or going into the 2nd choice, Let’s turn this around a bit. An addition question I have for you to contemplate… How can the energy of the White Rabbit express through you? If your Presence demonstrates such profound and heart-centered vitality, That you may be a beacon, attracting new friends And traveling companions. It could be YOUR Presence, your words, your unique sparkling qualities, Your expression…. That speaks to the heart of another human in A way that sparks inspiration. If that proves to be the case, Will you hold out your hand to another, And say “welcome” to this path, “how do you like the view?” Will you be guidance, acceptance, discernment? The first question is: Will you explore this path? Will you answer the call to adventure? Will you follow the White Rabbit? Will you BECOME the White Rabbit? Will you be a living inspiration? I will say YES to this call Take the next few minutes to explore these questions. Namaste! Now my hero you come to your 2nd choice. The question before you is “will you commit to this journey?” The 2nd choice your journey.... is the choice of whether or not to commit to this journey before you. Here you stand at this precipice knowing that you can turn back, and easily return to the familiar, or you can step ahead crossing the threshold showing the world what the energy of YES looks like when the question is “will you take this chance?” Following your path to adventure as it leads directly out into the unknown into the uncharted wilderness You take this step, because you say YES my hero This choice is commitment. Maybe you’ll boldly leap out of that comfort zone maybe you’ll carefully tiptoe. In either case, at first the scenery is familiar. The sounds and smells are familiar, but very soon the scenery begins to change. the faces you encounter are not the familiar faces. Some are friendly, some are not. You wander into this land of Wonder, you start to learn of magic that exists in this world, magic that you’ve always possessed, that works through you, and never had a name for. Maybe you’ve felt this magic, felt it in you, seen it at play in your life when you weren’t intending... now being validated and confirmed as very real. Like Luke Skywalker learning of the force, and Harry Potter learning of his magical powers, so do you find your art, your passion, your expression, YOUR magic. You start to see how you are a channel for this magic, for this new creativity. You start to make friends my Hero, you make acquaintances, You start to find teachers. Teachers and masters masters that are already well versed and experienced in this magic, masters that can show you a trick or two. You begin to experience initiations, rites of passage leading to new levels of awareness, of skill of ability. You start to find information, you get hints as to “what you’re made of” from those around you. For they may see your potential more easily than you. Maybe this is thrilling to you, and you embrace it with glee. Maybe this is terrifying to you, and you shy from it in denial. You look around at your surroundings, Things are beginning to look less and less familiar. The faces are less recognizable, maybe they’re a different shape maybe they’re a different height maybe they’re a different color maybe they speak a different language maybe they’re saying things you don’t understand maybe you are unable to communicate effectively with them. You’re venturing into the wilderness, and this wilderness is where you start to run into challenges into resistance into dangers. Your footing is not so solid anymore, as the path has become unpredictable and sometimes precarious. The faces are even less familiar now, and you may experience language barriers. more invisible obstacles these language barriers Or maybe you see less faces, and more wilderness. The energy of safety has been slowly fading, because even the elements around you are becoming less benign. Your gentle initiations start to take on the feel of a trial by fire. You begin to catch a glimpse here and there of darkness that exists in the world. An adversary, a shadow, a nemesis. Nowadays, more often, the “darkness” that becomes our nemesis is not outside of us, not tangible in this world, but exists inside of us self created by our fear of being great, self created by playing safe, and being afraid of change. Self created as the barrier that keeps you from viewing your Self as your greatest potential...realized. As you continue on, leaving the boundary of your own comfort zone further and further behind you, you start to approach or encounter the limits that you allowed to hold you safely in that comfort zone for so long. This resistance starts to become stronger, and something happens.... you get your first true experience of the darkness, more than just a glimpse. You are confronted by it’s true face for the very first time, looking upon it, unable to duck away from the danger, being truly confronted. Your fear welling up in you and saying “I’m in danger, I’m so far from home, that I’m in a dangerous place, where I’m not protected, where it is not safe, and I am vulnerable” Maybe that’s a place within you, maybe that’s a place of opening up to people maybe the resistance that you’ve run into is the wall that you’ve created around yourself to protect you from other people. It’s very effective because it’s kept them away. So here you are my Hero. You’ve been learning about the magic, You’ve been learning about the danger, you’re suddenly thrust into a position, and feeling afraid, or terrified. Fearing what you don’t understand, fearing what you don’t know fearing the unpredictable. Afraid of anything that your mind cannot wrap itself around. It seems bigger than you can handle. Now you come to the third choice my Hero. For this third choice is whether or not to escape. The question before you is “how can I run from this?” You’re overwhelmed by everything that’s happening, not having time to process, or regroup, maybe that escape means sinking into yourself, maybe it means physically removing yourself from the situation, maybe it means denial. But whatever it is, we say “NO, I can’t do this”. and you back away, you shrink. You look for the way home. Here you are, a stranger in a VERY strange land, unable to communicate with anyone around you. maybe you’re alone because you’re in a sea of people yet you’re isolated, maybe you’re alone because you actually ARE isolated. Which of these is more maddening? To be in a community, but unable to experience it, or to be utterly alone and know that there is a community out there. Unable to be heard or hear anyone else, unable to be understood or understand, unable to be loved or to love. We’ve all been there, in these places. In some of our stories, we are there right now. You know them, they may be calling to you as these words move from me to you. We’ve all had that yearning that led us to wander our of our comfort zones and answer that call of What else is out there? There’s got to be more to life than this! And now your question is being answered, yet what you see is that if you turn and try to return on the path behind you... you cannot go back the same way from whence you came. Either there have been bridges that have been burned, on the way or maybe it’s just not physically possible, maybe it’s become more dangerous to go back along the path behind you. Maybe you’re up against a wall. But whatever the case is, my Hero, you need to move through this energy and get to the other side of it. Unfortunately, this is where the Hero runs into the deepest challenge of all... that is the disheartening of their own spirit. This is where depression may creep in, this is where you can feel the isolation closing in on you with every step, and every breath. This is the very deep Dark Night of the Soul. This is where no light pierces the darkness. This is where you, my Hero, may get stuck in the invisible quicksand of your despair. This is where an unseen danger creeps in, the longer you stay in this place, the harder it gets to pull your Self up out of the hopelessness. A saying I’ve heard before is this... if you find your Self walking through Hell, Don’t stop walking. It’s one of those sayings where it may seem like stating the obvious at the time, but there are many cases I know of where people have found themselves walking through hell, and stopped walking, unknowingly sentencing themselves to that self created hell because they lost their bearings. When we make a choice to stop walking through hell, we never leave. An energy that is very prevalent in this choice, is the energy of “orphan”. The feeling that you are utterly alone, without support, that you are truly on your own. But what you must remember my Hero, is that believing is seeing, not the other way around. If you see isolation around you, that will be your experience. Whether you are actually alone, or not. I hope you do not stay here my Hero, for this world needs YOU. The gifts that YOU are to master, can NOT be expressed by anyone else in this world, no one before you, and no one after you. Your gifts.... are YOUR God Given Gifts, and I do not use that phrase lightly. Now we come to your Fourth choice my Hero, and the question before you is... “will you recommit to your Life?” Here it is, the choice to recommit, to see where this goes, to see it through to the end. This is where it is up to YOU, up to your strength, up to your resilience, to dig deep within you, and see what you’re made of. To call to the greatness within you, no matter how small or intimidating it seems and say “I will not lay down, I know now what is out there, and in here, I know this darkness, I have seen my nemesis, I have looked it in the eye and where I may have cowered before, I will make a new choice NOW.” Standing in that knowledge, standing in that truth, standing in the knowing... knowing the danger that is there, knowing the strength that is in here, knowing the magic that is present everywhere, knowing there is wisdom and tools, knowing there are comrades and enemies, knowing what lies beneath this rough coal to see the flawless diamond that lies within the core. This is where that darkness, that dark night of the soul is pierced by hope, pierced by that voice within us, crying out “Get UP!”. That single burning light of hope, that never goes out. For even with this little bit of hope, it is enough to illuminate the path, it is enough to cause us to pull our legs up from the quicksand, and say YES, I will keep going. I will not lay down, I will not stop. I will not die here. I will not be broken. Steve Vai once said in a song.... “It is always in my heart, they will always see it in my eyes, I am Passion, I am Warfare, I will never Stop. Always Constant, Accurate, Intense.” An now, my Hero, Once you make that choice to recommit to the journey, a new way opens up for you. A new way forward that you’ve not seen before. You advance, step by step, breath by breath, moving forward despite any fear you have, knowing that you will have to face that nemesis, that danger, that opposition at some point. The advantage you have now, IS this knowing, so you begin preparing your Self for this clash. You need to hone your strengths, you need to face your weaknesses and do what you can to turn those into strengths as well. This is a different commitment from your first one. In the Matrix, this is the point when Morpheus says to Neo “It is the difference between knowing the path, and walking the path.” You may stand at the edge of your path for your whole life, looking at it, studying it, measuring it, but it is not until you step across that threshold onto the path, that definitive beginning, and walk with your head high, one foot in front of the other, that you are actually walking your path. Sometimes you may have to leap across wide chasms, not knowing how far the other side is, or even if there is an other side. You may have to climb extremely high and precarious mountains. But always keep moving forward. For at some point, you know you will come face to face with that nemesis, you will come face to face with the boundary of your limits, and the fight you wage, may be the fight of your life, for your life. For your survival, for your growth, for the fate of the world. But it’s OK. You will be prepared. So for now, you seek out more teachers, companions, helpers, you learn the secrets of the magic that moves in you, through the wisdom of your teachers’ path, and this is always available to you at all times if you allow them to contribute to you. When Luke Skywalker discovered the Force, he discovered it was something that was already within him, he just had to access it, make it available, sharpen it, practice it, and concentrate it, He had to give up the limits he needed to give up in order to come to that place of being, able to use the magic skillfully, artfully. So that it was an extension of his SELF. More than just a tool in his toolbox. As is the case in most Hero’s Journeys, many times we are confronted by our darkness or with our nemesis before we believe that we are ready. So whether or not we are ready, here is the time when we must stand and face it. An image that comes to my mind is of 2 lone figures, standing on a desolate plain, facing each other, with no visible buildings, or trees, or signs of life from horizon to horizon, each figure casting a long shadow. Facing each other, sizing each other up, regarding each other eye to eye, knowing this is their time... and it’s time to settle this. It’s time for the Fight my Hero. The 5th choice. The question before you is: “Ready or not, will you fight for your life?” The choice is to stand in that confrontation, and not back down. To say I stand for my life I stand for my freedom I stand for my skill I stand for my friends I stand for my growth, this world needs me to see this through to the other side, and I will not allow myself to be held back. I will overcome this limit. And now begins that fight. This is the battle with your darkness. With your constraints. Since most of these struggles are about battling the limits within us... It’s sometimes an even match, but unfortunately, it’s not typically an even match... you, my Hero, are the one that is the underdog. For your fear knows your buttons, it is skilled at making you back down. It is your fear after all, that has held you back for so long. It’s been present in you, for much longer than you’ve known of its existence. It may be a battle of epic proportions that could go on for the rest of your life, or it might be something that is over in the blink of an eye. It’s your choice. But what happens through this fight, is that there are losses on both sides. Sacrifices are made, There are things given up, lost over the course of this battle, whether voluntarily or involuntarily. There are cuts, lacerations, wounds. Maybe it’s as simple as being stuck in a place, maybe it’s being stuck in a job that is unfulfilling and wanting to quit or follow a new life pursuit more in alignment with your self expression, or giving up a relationship that you know to be limiting or without love, but you fear the loneliness at the end. Maybe you would choose to try and escape this battle, like you chose to escape your first commitment. Maybe you will choose to move backward in your Hero’s Journey, back into escape. This is an even more dangerous place to be, because your nemesis knows more about you, about how to make you back down. Here, my Hero, what you need to realize is that you cannot surpass, you cannot surmount this challenge in the same energy in which it was created. You cannot move through this until you give up that limit. And once you give it up, you will realize that defeating this nemesis is as simple as saying “I will not fight you anymore, you have no more power over me, I am giving up that which is holding me back, I am giving up this fear, I am giving up this attitude, I am giving up this sadness, I am giving up this job, I am giving up this relationship, I am giving up my excuses, I am giving up whatever I need to give up, I am taking this chance, this leap of faith.” In the movie “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”, there is a point near the end when Indiana comes to a chasm in a mountain, with a seemingly bottomless pit in front of him. He recognizes that he needs to make a leap of faith, meaning leap out into the space in front of him, seeing the other side of the chasm way too far for him to humanly jump with his human legs. So he closes his eyes, puts out his leg, and steps off the edge of the cliff into nothingness, only to land on the path which was right in front of him the entire time. He was just unable to see it with his eyes, from his point of view at the edge of the chasm. It is only AFTER he has taken that leap, that he realized the way through the challenge was right there, in front of him the whole time. All he had to do was take that leap, and surrender to his fear. This my Hero, is the sixth choice. The choice to surrender. The question before you now is “What will you surrender to evolve through this challenge?” Will it be fear? Will it be blame? Will it be unforgiveness? In the first Matrix, when Neo was shot, point blank by the Agent, he died in the Matrix. He gave up his fear around being limited by the constraints of the Matrix. Just as Trinity gave up her fear around revealing her love to him, She was the heart energy of Neo. And suddenly, the bullets in the Matrix, from the Agents of the Matrix, had no power. Neo was able to quietly say “no” And the bullets simply stopped in midair. No more power, no more force, no more effect. Sometimes it IS the heart that has to wake up and say “I am not afraid” as well as the mind, and the body, and the spirit. For without our hearts, are we truly human? I am not afraid. This darkness will not beat me because I no longer fear it. I am not afraid! It has no more power over me! I am not afraid. Now, calmly, quietly, definitively, I am not afraid. From a book of Mayan Oracle: Return Path to the Stars, under the sign of Kimi, “In this surrender, I offer death to your self-imposed boundaries as naturally as a molting snake sheds its constricting limitations. In this surrender, die to old patterns and belief systems that no longer serve the perfection of your becoming. In this surrender, let go. Yield to the pattern of perfection, freed from the bondage of control's illusion. I am the life, transformation, and insight that grows out of death. In this surrender, through death and transformation, receive my most precious gift-- the revelation and flowering of the true garden of self.” So here’s the punch line, my Hero, how long will it take you to realize, that in this fight, you’ve been fighting with your own shadow? You’ve been shadowboxing. And now, effortlessly, after this battle has raged, you quietly surrender, like a reed in a strong wind, you unloose the bonds of your boundaries, and set them down. You are not afraid. Fear is no longer in your consciousness, and you are free of it. You are reborn in this surrender of your old stories. Now you have an understanding, a mastery of your magic you have learned what you are capable of, and what you’re made of. You’ve learned what happens when you dig deep, to your essence, to your core, and the journey of this discovery to move through the challenge to the new world on the other side. This is the dawn of a new day where we acknowledge our new powers. We have these new skills, we are now able to be teachers and guides for others, while being respectful of their paths as well. We’re able to help those along who are on the path we’ve just traveled. But we cannot fight the battles for others. While we may be able to share our wisdom, to help them along their path, it is really up to each individual when they make their choice about their commitment, their escape, their recommitment their fight, and their surrender. And here my Hero, we come to the 7th choice, and that is to return home. The question before you is “will you return to your place of origin and complete this journey?” It is finally when you’ve surrendered to these limits, only when the battle has ended, when it is over, that the light of dawn illuminates your way home. You’re also able to see what casualties have happened during the raging and waging of your epic battle. You’re seeing what you’ve lost, and what you’ve gained. Maybe you’ll have some scars, and some great stories to share as a result of it, In your return home, you return to your Source, to the beginning of your journey. Maybe it’s a physical return to your home, to your family of origin, maybe it’s recentering of your Self in your heart, maybe it’s simply an acknowledgement of the battle’s end, maybe it’s returning to sleep at the end of the day. And then what happens is that you have the marriage of these 2 worlds. The “new” you, the wizard, returning to your origins. You are now the Peaceful Warrior, the Wise and peaceful Sage having laid down your weapons, having no need for defenses. Sometimes, when these worlds come together, these worlds collide, as some of us may have found out when we experience a transformation and return to our family of origin. You may find that when you return home, the people that were once so familiar, don’t recognize you anymore. And you may have to give them a chance to get to know you, maybe even a chance to grieve the loss of your former self. It may happen that this will be a struggle in itself, that there will be another Hero’s Journey for you in this process of returning home. But it is always important to have this completion, this acknowledgment, this validation, this returning to Source, even if it comes only from you. For now you can see how the Hero’s Journey is prevalent all over your life. How each day is a Hero’s Journey, an outing can be a Hero’s Journey, a job can be a Hero’s Journey, a relationship can be a Hero’s Journey, an identity can be a Hero’s Journey, a lifetime can be a Hero’s Journey. There are so many Hero’s Journeys happening, that when I asked the question “where does it begin?” not even the Hero could truly answer that in their own story. But one thing is for certain, once you, the Hero, return home, that’s when this cycle begins all over again. And the teacher will once again become the student. The next journey will be even more magnificent, more dangerous, more challenging, and you will gain even more mastery in your journey. One last question I pose to you, My Hero, will YOU be a White Rabbit, for the journey of another. And will you say YES, to the journey of your lifetime. God knows ItSelf through OUR Journeys, Through our Learning, our Growth, and our Sharing. Go in peace now, Journey well. Namaste. Amen. (track 4) Choice 5...The Choice to Fight The 5th question is: “Ready or not, Will you fight for your life?” Will you look your nemesis in the eye and not shrink? Will you fight for your life, and the sake of the world? I will say YES to this confrontation, For this confrontation comes from my Source, From God. This is the sound of my fight. (track 5) Choice 6...The Choice to Surrender The 6th question is: “Will you surrender to evolve through this challenge?” Will you allow old stories and limits to die and fade away?
